WIZARDING WORLD SPELL GAME

IDEATION

The game would function as a tracing game and teach spells that are actually part of Universal’s interactive installments. The style direction follows a paper cut-out style, paying homage to the parchment paper used throughout the movies.

This style also references a famous scene in Deathly Hallows when the Tale of Three Brothers is explained.

FEATURED SPELLS

Alohomora - An unlocking spell
“Friendly to thieves”

Reparo - A repairing spell
“I fix”

Wingardium Leviosa - levitation
“lifted wings”

THE BRIEF

Create a fun, informative, interactive mobile game prototype that explains the meanings behind Harry Potter spells.

The app is meant to explain the meanings of Harry Potter spells while also functioning as an advertisement for the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

DEVIVERABLES:

A 1080x1920 mobile game with audio, text, sound effects, a title, and credits. All created in Rive.

STORYBOARDS

The player is instructed by an unseen guide, learning how to trace the different spells with their wand. The spells are performed on our subject, the dangling spider.

DEVELOPMENT

We first began by building key assets, including the opening screen, the scene where the player casts spells, the spells themselves, internal assets like buttons and customization options, as well as the game layout.

In the final result, we were able to get each of the spell buttons to function when the user presses them with their wand. The instructions and the idle guide animation reside in the bottom section and guide the user through the spell-casting.

05.

DIVING INTO RIVE

After we had everything animated and in its proper place, we got everything plugged in and in motion. The wand follows the user’s touch, and they can trace over the path of the spell to learn its pattern.

There is also a guide in the bottom left that helps to instruct the user. When they trace the pattern, their guide congratulates them as well.

The spell effects and particles are also present in this stage, showing when the spell is created and responds to the user’s trace path.

WORK IN PROGRESS FEATURES

MADE BUT DIDN’T MAKE IT

THE GAME BROUGHT TO LIFE

FINAL RESULT

Incedio - A flame spell
“I set on fire”

Arresto Momentum - a halting spell
“I stop (your) movement”

Finite Incantatem - a cancelling spell
“Stop this spell!”

ANIMAL GUIDES

RIVE INTERACTIVITY

The user has the choice to choose a guide to follow along with their spell-casting journey. The choices of guide animals were a cat, an owl, and a rat. The animal choices were based on the most common pets in the Harry Potter series.

Each animal has:

-Idle animation

-Select/hover on animation

-Deselect/hover off animation

MENU SCREENS

The user is able to toggle the menu button in the top right corner and select their house assignment, their animal guide, and their wand style. Each menu is equipped with an open scroll-down and a close scroll-up animation.

GATHERING REFERENCE

BEHIND THE SCENES AT EPIC UNIVERSE

We decided to take the opportunity to actually visit Universal Studios’ Harry Potter world to get a hands-on experience to reference for the project. During our time there, we saw plenty of attractions and visuals to reference. We were also able to purchase our own interactive wands and use them at different points in the park.
