This concept gives you a visual that lines up almost exactly with what you hear. The song has plenty of funky and figurative wording that creates vivid imagery with the lyrics on their own. The lyrics would show on screen alongside the animation, with bold lettering.

This song is completely instrumental, with an abstract female vocalization. Like the last song, this one also utilizes samples to create an up-beat and whimsical track. This concept would use both cel and video footage, rotoscoping abstract dancing figures over photos and video footage of different cozy countrysides. The photos and videos would aim to convey the feeling of home, while the rotoscoped figures playing and dancing are to represent the feelings and memories forever tied to the places we inhabit.

Create a concise animated piece in response to a spontaneous prompt from your supervisor. The goal is to interpret their off-the-cuff idea, demonstrate your awareness, and prove you’re paying attention.

CONCEPT 1
REFERENCE
After effects rotoscope & refine tool, isolate each subject, and apply the roughen edge effect paired with layer dissolving. Abstracting and taking in all of the footage edges.

EXECUTION
To achieve the final look of my piece, I layered a combination of overlaid effects, temporal adjustments, and stylized edge treatments throughout the composition. After isolating each subject with After Effects’ Rotoscope and Refine Edge tools, I applied roughened edges and subtle layer dissolves to abstract the contours of the footage. I then incorporated blending modes and grain adjustments to integrate the rotoscoped subjects more organically into the environment. To enhance the rhythm and visual texture, I used Posterize Time to create a choppier, frame-by-frame aesthetic, while glow and overlay effects provided dynamic highlights that emphasized motion.
Color treat and animate the scale & position of the background and text layer.
CONCEPT 2
This song is packed full of instrument and vocal samples, creating an atmospheric, up-beat and almost abstract audio. I have always personally visualized imagery of multiple aerial shots of different isolated countrysides and rural scenes when visualizing the audio, the airy whimsy speaks of nature and open, vivid skies and planes.

Every color used in the music video ties back into the song’s album cover colors. I am a big fan of the colors chosen for the cover and wanted to honor the artist’s choices in choosing the colors I let leak into the happiest peaks of the project.
